FORMAL AND INFORMAL VALUE CHAINS (VCs) IN THE DAIRY AND FRESH FOOD SECTOR: THE CASE FOR KENYA
Task:
Assessment of VCs for dairy and Tomato and their production input structure, identification of intensification processes, their drivers as well as their social and environmental externalities (external effects) along the VCs, description of impact of externalities especially on social and environmental sustainability, water use efficiency, land use changes and product quality.

Practical training of problem based learning (PBL) methods, teamwork, scientific research methods. Dairy VCs is being handled by four groups of students each group comprising 4 members; the Tomato (fresh food) VCs is being handled by one group of 3 students.

Participants:
Students from different BSc programmes at EGU, one from the Department of Animal Sciences and the other from the Horticulture Department, have undertaken the responsibility of investigating and presenting project outcomes.

BELOW ARE SPECIFIC CASE STUDIES ON ONGOING STUDENT PROJECTS

1. Evaluation of milk safety and quality enhancing innovation in the informal supply chain
2. Identifying water use efficiency enhancing innovations in the informal sector of dairy value chain
3. Milk safety and quality: Identifying innovation practices enhancing safety, quality and affordability of fresh milk in the formal supply chain
4. To evaluate water use efficiency enhancing innovations in the formal dairy value chain
5. Value chain analysis of tomatoes in the greater Nakuru District

Duration:
October 2009 – April 2010
The empirical research phase takes place in Kenya in March, 2010.
